Grape Seed Extract (Gravinol S)
Grape Seed Extract (Gravinol S) is one of the most powerful antioxidants found. With proven antioxidant and chemoprotective properties to help fight against free radicals and oxidative stress. Grape Seed Extract provides a highly concentrated source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's) which are known to possess a broad spectrum of biological, antioxidant and cardio protective properties. The "Bad Guys"
In order to live up to our biological potential we must first deal with eliminating toxic invaders that destroy our health. We are constantly bombarded with cellular-damaging substances, called free radicals, generated by our environment from air, water pollutants, and other substances. Sunlight, radiation, drugs, pesticides, chemicals, solvents, fried foods, alcohol and tobacco smoke are just a few more examples of free-radical generating substances. Free radicals are also produced as the natural byproducts of metabolism. Oxygen free radicals are not always the "bad guys"; they serve a purpose in the body by burning bacteria and refuse matter. When our body is overburdened with free radicals out of control, they create a condition in the body termed oxidative stress, which can seriously compromise the immune system and gives rise to disease and decay, which may threaten our lives.
The War Within
The body is made up of billions of molecules that contain the basic elements and building blocks to support life. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that have lost an electron. These molecules are highly reactive, unstable, and capable of destroying an enzyme, protein molecule, or a complete cell through oxidation by stealing electrons from other nearby molecules. This sets off a free radical chain reaction in otherwise healthy cell membranes and tissues in the body. Free radicals multiply geometrically. They rapidly go out of control leading to breakdown in the organs and other systems of the body including the brain and nervous system.
DNA contains the blueprint for all healthy cell production, function and renewal. Every second of our lives billions of free radicals are waging war in our bodies trying to destroy our cells and alter genetic material. Free radicals can interfere with DNA coding so severely that it may make mutated enzymes that cannot function and cells that cannot reproduce. This seriously compromises the immune system and gives rise to disease and decay, which may threaten our lives.
The "Good Guys"
Our bodies try to protect us from free radical damage by producing antioxidant enzymes that neutralize them. However, they are not capable of handling this function without trace mineral co-factors and antioxidants provided from our diets. Antioxidants are protective molecules also referred to as free radical scavengers. Antioxidants destroy free radicals by feeding them electrons that change their chemical structure. These new stabilized compounds actually enhance the oxidative process.
The most widely known protective antioxidant from food sources are beta carotene and vitamins A, C, and E. We protect our cars from rust by painting them; we seal in freshness in our food by using plastic bags. Some antioxidants are protectors of other antioxidants, some increase the potential of others, and some can even regenerate other antioxidants. Cofactor to Vitamin C
OPCs strengthen capillaries, arteries and veins. Also, by reducing capillary fragility, OPCs help prevent bruising. The heart pumps our blood and the arteries and veins carry it, but it is the capillaries that deliver nutrients to our cells, exchanging them for waste products. The effects of OPC supplementation can be seen in a very short period of time. In one study, conducted by Professor Henri Choussat of the University of Bordeaux in France, 47 people, 37 to 85 years old, were given one 100 milligram OPC supplement. In 72 hours they were found to have increased capillary resistance by 140%.

Heart Disease is the number one killer in western countries. French women and men have 50% less heart disease than Americans do. This is in spite of the fact that the French generally have a much higher fat diet than most Americans. The French are famous for wine and it is generally served at mealtime. French wine drinkers have a 30% to 40% lower risk of coronary heart disease than non-wine drinkers. Red wine contains OPC. In making red wine the whole grape is fermented, including the crushed seeds and skins. In making white wine only squeezed juice is used which contains very little OPC.
Cholesterol is an essential-component of cell membranes and facilitates the transport of fatty acids. However, excess cholesterol is a potential threat to health. Vitamin C and its cofactors are known to degrade cholesterol into bile salts and help to eliminate it. The degradation and elimination of harmful cholesterol is enhanced by OPC. Once again the synergistic relationship between vitamin C and OPC is verified.
Varicose vein symptoms can include aching, itching, burning, and fatigue. Severe varicose veins can lead to heart attacks, strokes, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism. Dr. G. Feine-Haake conducted a clinical study in Hamburg, Germany, to see if OPC supplementation would benefit people with varicose veins. Participating in the study were 110 people with varicose veins (41 were also experiencing nightly leg cramps). The individuals were given 90 milligrams of OPC daily. There was significant improvement in 77%. Additionally, 93% of the 41 individuals with leg cramps experienced relief.
Edema is a condition that allows fluid to leak out of the bloodstream into the body tissues. It is generally characterized by swelling of the affected areas. Edema can occur in healthy people after prolonged periods of sitting, and some women experience it before menstruation. Sports injuries generally result in edema, and it can occur after certain surgical operations. Some pathological conditions can also lead to edema. Research shows that taking an OPC dietary supplement can significantly relieve edema. In one clinical trial, scientists from the University of Florence studied the effects of leg edema on 40 individuals having an average age of 60 years. The subjects were divided into two groups. The control group received 300 mg of OPC for 60 days. All of the subjects experienced relief of at least some of the symptoms. After 30 days, swelling disappeared in 26% of those taking OPC. After 60 days, 63% of the participants were free of any swelling of the legs.
OPC the Vision Protector
Diabetic retinopathy is a manifestation of diabetes that causes microbleeding of the eye capillaries and is a common cause of blindness in adults. OPC has been a licensed treatment for this malady in France for many years. It has proven to reduce microbleeding of the capillaries markedly and improve eyesight noticeably.
Healthy people not suffering from eye defects or eye disease were chosen for a 1998 study about the effects OPC might have for relieving night blindness. The participants consisted of two groups, motorists who drove at night and computer screen watchers. Their resistance to blinding was measured after four weeks. Ninety-eight out of the one hundred people who participated in the test showed improvement.
